It is a great discovery that is offered to us here, at least for a majority of people, and which we should hear about again soon. Privileging photography, Dimitra Dede is a visual artist of Greek origin. Now living in London, she spent more than fifteen years at the Athens Public Historical Archives, and is exhibiting for the first time in a French institution.
Christian Caujolle, artistic adviser to the Galerie du Château d’eau in Toulouse, made no mistake when programming it, on the good advice of Cristina Ferraiuolo who is at the head of the Spot home gallery in Naples. Having already been noticed with the publication of her book Mayflies in 2020 in Arles and by Simon Baker (MEP) in 2019, the photographer from Ápeiron gives us to see, under a very personal look, dark atmospheres, fragmented landscapes, vibrant materials, veiled glaciers and unveiled bodies. The whole thing is bathed in a grainy haze that makes us wonder if it’s all real. The movement of bodies and materials mingle, evoking the cycles of life, metaphors for the ephemeral of existence. The prints made on very fine Japanese paper – by François Leblond in Berlin – are weightless, suspended inside the frames, adding fragility to the whole. |

This visual accumulation results from the wanderings of the artist, who often leaves without even knowing what she is looking for; she photographs instinctively, and completes her work even better when she processes her images in the lab, using chemistry, paints or the degradation of her negatives.
We are here in the presence of a work that defends the idea that photography can be a reflection of our unconscious, and that in the act itself, it allows us to explore sensations that escape us.
